Gati Shakti National Master Plan was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2021 for planning multimodal infrastructure connectivity to economic nodes. The master plan is a comprehensive database of ongoing and future infrastructure projects of various ministries integrated. The larger aim is to bring down logistics cost across the country by plugging connectivity gaps while supporting data-based decision making.
Apart from central government departments, all states and union territories have already uploaded data on the national masterplan. As of now, more than 1,450 layers of information have been uploaded on the national masterplan, including crucial information ranging from rail, port and port connectivity, gas pipelines, optic fibre across the country to land records, which may include personal data as well. Of this, 585 data layers have been uploaded by 36 central ministries and departments, while 872 of them have been uploaded by states and union territories.
All the existing and proposed economic zones have already been mapped in a portal, carrying the details of multimodal connectivity infrastructure. The masterplan will also be used to plan social infrastructure needs of the country such as hospitals and schools.
To take forward their participation, states have now been asked to conduct inter-department meetings and interact with investors and regional business associations to understand their requirements. Development of logistics parks, integrated with warehouses, check posts, land custom stations and temperature-controlled facilities have also been proposed to be set by the states in their respective policy frameworks.
While currently only the state and central government departments can access the portal, a recent proposal has pitched sharing of the GatiShakti national masterplan data with the private sector as well.
